Remembering Youth
I am going to slowly take you into an area buried deep in the mind of me.

A recent phone call/question
regarding Jealousy
Yesterday, a reader named Jim called with a question about Jealousy. He wanted to
know what effect getting involved with Swinging might have on his marriage and if he
should expect jealousy to be an issue. He and his wife are happily married, but wanted
to "spice" things up a little. They had talked about getting together with another couple
but neither wanted to do anything that might harm the great relationship they already have.
Here is what I told them:
Basically this question boils down to the effect of Swinging and its inherent jealousy on a
relationship. It's important to understand that Swinging is unlikely to fix a broken relationship.
However, like entering any new endeavor as a couple, it fosters increased communication.
Generally increased communication means improved communication, which improves the
relationship. This sounds like a circular self fulfilling prophecy. In a sense it is, however, it is
critical to make sure that Jealousy doesn't become a cog in the wheel.
Jim asked if Jealousy should be expected. The answer is that Jealousy should absolutely
be expected when entering the Swinging Lifestyle. The reason I say this is that even when
people have been in the Lifestyle for a Decade or more, Jealousy still does rear its ugly head.
Jealousy can be an illogical beast. Quite often what you expect to cause Jealousy causes no
problem and visa versa. For example I have seen couples fine with intercourse, then extreme
jealousy arises from a passionate kiss!
The key is to expect Jealousy which effects both men and women, and take the take the
appropriate measures to diminish it's frequency and severity.
Here are some tips:
1. Before any Swinging situation, be sure that you set predetermined guidelines as to
what is or is not acceptable behavior.
2. As individuals, be sure that you each adhere to these guidelines.
3. Try not to modify these guidelines "on the spot," even as a couple.
4. Make an extra effort to assure your partner that they are "number one."
5. Make sure that your partner isn't made to feel that they are simply a "ticket" into the lifestyle.
6. If Jealousy does occur, face it head on. Pay attention to what has caused the jealousy.
Discuss what has happened and either modify or curtail the cause.
7. Try not to involve yourself in Swinging if you are in a significant fight or your relationship is
at a particular low.
Follow these tips you'll be on your way to enjoying the Lifestyle more and wasting less energy on
Jealousy.
